Case Study: Delefenema Advertising
The goal of this case study is A) to identify the typical subscribers and group them, then B) determine on which magazines to advertise to reach the good audience, and finally C) estimate the total cost for advertising all products.
A) The technique used to determine the typical subscribers and group them was to unstack the original data into 3 groups (upper line, middle line and lower line), and use StatTools to get the mean of every variables for each group.
AGE GENDER INCOME TIMEWEEK
MILEWEEK
FITNESS EDUCATION
UPPER LINE 29.205 0.7949 50102.56 4.436 168.46 4.6667 3.2308
MIDDLE LINE 29.361 0.5082 32967.21 2.9344 83.28 2.8361 2.6230
LOWER LINE 28.600 0.5500 30700.00 3.0125 88.00 2.9625 2.4625
1. UPPER LINE STATISTICS RESULTS AND INTERPRETATIONS:
• Fitness: 4.6667, which means, “good” to “excellent” shape.
• Gender: 0.2051, which means Male 79.49%, Female 20.51%
• Education: 3.2308, which means “College Degree”
Therefore, the profile of a “typical “upper line bicycle customer is a 29 years old male, with a yearly income of $50,102.56, who uses the bicycle 4 to 5 times a week, completing 168.46 miles a week, with a good” to “excellent”shape, and finally who has a college degree.
Active Profil.
2. MIDDLE LINE STASTISTICS RESULTS AND INTERPRETATIONS:
• Fitness: 2.8361, which means, “ok” shape.
• Gender: 0.4918, which means Male 50.82%, Female 49.18%
• Education: 2.6230, which means the average level between “Some College” and “College Degree”
Therefore, the profile of a “typical” middle line bicycle customer is a 29 years old male or female indifferently, with a yearly income of $32967.21, who uses the bicycle about 3 times a week, completing 83.28 miles a week, with an “ok” shape, and finally who has “some college“ degree or “college degree” indifferently.
Medium activity profil.
3. LOWER LINE STATISTICS RESULTS AND INTERPRETATIONS:
• Fitness: 2.9625, which means, “ok” shape.
• Gender: 0.4500, which means Male 55.00%, Female 45.00%
• Education: 2.4625, which means the average level between “Some College” and “College Degree”
Therefore, the profile of a “typical” lower line bicycle customer is a 28-29 years old male or female indifferently, with a yearly income of $30700.00, who uses the bicycle 3 times a week, completing 88.00 miles a week, with an “ok” shape, and finally who has ”some college” degree or “college degree” indifferently.
Medium activity profil.
We can observe that the middle line and lower line customer's profile are pretty much the same.
B) Using the condition formula on excel or even by elimination due to the low number of magazines, we try to determine the magazine's readers that correspond to our “typical” customer profile.
Age % Male Education Salary Activity Level Line
Business World 30 70 BA 50,000 active upper
Family Living 30 55 HS/BA 31,000 medium middle/lower
Outdoor Fun 27 55 HS/BA 30,000 medium middle/lower
Software Review 28 60 BA 48,000 active upper
C) By using the data given in the case and by taking into consideration the study made on A) and B), we can determine the total cost of advertising for Cycle World knowing they are willing to invest up to $240,000
The case says the average cost of a half-page costs 2,000 per issue for these magazines.
We recommended 4 magazines which means 4 X 2,000= $8,000
In addition the case says that the company will place 5 ads in each issue, which means:
8,000 X 5= $40,000.
Finally, the case says that ads will be issued four times during the year, that means:
$40,000x 4= $160,000
Thus the company saved $80,000.
